Maria Kgabo, Woman of the year 2000

“These days people expect a miracle each time I open my mouth to speak!” Stalwart community builder, Maria Kgabo, says she still can’t believe how much receiving the Award has changed her life for the better. Maria’s commitment to uplifting her community in the Tzaneen area was rewarded when she became SABC3/Shoprite Checkers Woman of the Year in 2000. Her work has included the creation of jobs and the establishment of classrooms and a community centre. She has also instituted unique water preservation projects in which water is collected from rooftops and stored for the dry season.

“I am still working hard on so many things,” says Maria. “My projects have expanded to two more villages and I am on the committee for the Area Development Programme.” This programme is aimed at developing the infrastructure of rural areas.

A regular day in Maria’s life consists of an array of commitments, including HIV/Aids workshops where people are taught about the disease, how to prevent it and what to do if they are HIV positive.  “These days people listen to me. Previously they never seemed to notice my work. It is so wonderful when your work is appreciated.”

Maria realises that the Award has made her a role model to other women as well as to the youth. “It has really motivated them – they have seen what can be achieved when you try and you work hard.”

Maria's work has reached more than 5000 people.
