The judging process
The judging sessions starts with two rounds of adjudication to determine the category finalists and winners. A prestigious judging panel sifts through the nominations and compile individual shortlists of 10 nominees in each category of the Award. Hereafter they meet in panels to compare their nominations and identify the three finalists in each of the seven Award categories – Arts, Culture & Communications; Business Entrepreneurs; Education; Health; Science & Technology; Social Welfare; and Sport.
The criteria used include whether the nominee has leadership skills, drive and a strong personal vision for herself; whether she is articulate and persuasive, and whether her work is relevant to the socio-economic conditions in her community and South Africa as a whole. The nominee’s suitability as a role model is essential and it is very important for this nominee to not only have achieved in her own right but also to have made a difference within her community.
The finalists undergo individual interviews by the panel of judges to determine a winner per category, as well as establish who will be presented with the overall Woman of the Year accolade.
The judging process culminates in the announcement of the category winners and overall winner during a gala event that is usually filmed for broadcast by SABC 2 on National Women’s Day, celebrated on 9 August each year.
