I was thrilled to see that Janet Buckland has made it through to the finals of the Shoprite Checkers Woman of the Year for the Arts and Culture catagory. Janet is an amazing woman, teacher and mother figure to hundreds of children in the Eastern Cape. Through her dance project she has given hundreds of girls and boys confidence, discipline and skill. Her theatre company Ubom! has ensured that hundreds and thousands of people''s lives have been changed through theatre. Her work as a lecturer at Rhodes has nutured some of South Africa''s top theatre makers in the country today. There is no doubt that Janet is not only ''Mama J'' to those who know her personally but mother of the arts in the Eastern Cape. The dedication, commitment and passion this woman has displayed makes her a worthy finalist and a deserving winner.

i Think Ms Ragophala is a motivated and commited teacher and you hardly find dedicated teachers in this age. teachers have lost their passion and they seem to have forgetten the reason they went into that profession........

Thank you! Shoprite Checkers and all the organizers of this event. The value of this form of encouragement, recognition and visibility to women and their heart felt endeavors, cannot be measured. No matter now small each contribution may appear - each little bit takes us a small step closer towards building a better nation and giving our dear children a better life.

I think what shoprite does is just magnificent because it does not only encourage other women to wake up and help the nation but it will also serve as a way to know that women are recgonised for what they do in particular and is a way to say thank you for what you do and hopefully this will spread your wings to fly further. I nominated someone this year but even if she doesn''''t win she will know that I and most people appreciate her struggling for a better future.Thank you shoprite.
